Chewing Gum
I'm not sure why this photo doesn't show it as intensely as I remembered, but I don't think I've seen as much chewing gum on the ground in one place as here outside of a disco in Oxford near the train station.

Buzz Up, Catch Down
Francisca wrote, "These were all taken on the Metro Train route from LA Airport to downtown . . . each stop has wonderful urban art."
I have no idea where the words and phrases come from in this uniquely thought-provoking staircase. Like a collage, the random juxtapositions cause an interesting cascade of images to form. Is the building at the top a psych center? Holistic healing and therapists' offices? Day Trading Central? Maybe Francisca can help us out here. I love the shadow in the first photo.Later: Francisca helped answer the question. She wrote, "Sheryl, this is what the architects said about the words: 'Walking up the station's stairs, passengers will discover words and phrases which have entered our 1990's vocabulary; will they remain in our lexicon or become obsolete?' Source: http://www.metro.net/about/art/locations/el-segundo-sta/#1" Thanks, Francisca!

Under the circumstances, the text on the metal cover is perfect. Check out today's post on Tapirgal's Daily Image to see the building reflected here.

Bent Bolt
This industrial-sized bolt is clearly something not to trip on. I don't remember exactly where I found it, but it's in the vicinity of the old Englund Marine along the River Walk in Astoria.

Compass Rose: Belém, western Lisbon, Portugal
Many thanks to JM of Oeiras and environs daily photo for the use of this magnificent piece of pavement! You MUST enlarge it. Those are actually people down there! For the full story and comments check out JM's original post of the rose.
I also learned from JM that this type of pavement pattern (the black and white wavy lines) originated in Portugal. Having not been to Portugal (yet), I first encountered similar patterns in Brazil. In fact, I posted one of the sidewalks from Sao Paulo during the first week of Tapirgal's Daily Image.
