Buzz Up, Catch Down

Staircase with Words and Phrases Los Angeles ~ 2003
From the series "Los Angeles Urban Art 2003"
by Francisca

Francisca wrote, "These were all taken on the Metro Train route from LA Airport to downtown . . . each stop has wonderful urban art."

Staircase at Los Angeles Transit Stop I have no idea where the words and phrases come from in this uniquely thought-provoking staircase. Like a collage, the random juxtapositions cause an interesting cascade of images to form. Is the building at the top a psych center? Holistic healing and therapists' offices? Day Trading Central? Maybe Francisca can help us out here. I love the shadow in the first photo.

Later: Francisca helped answer the question. She wrote, "Sheryl, this is what the architects said about the words: 'Walking up the station's stairs, passengers will discover words and phrases which have entered our 1990's vocabulary; will they remain in our lexicon or become obsolete?' Source: http://www.metro.net/about/art/locations/el-segundo-sta/#1" Thanks, Francisca!

Bent Bolt

Bent Bolt in Astoria, Oregon Astoria, Oregon ~ March 17, 2010

This industrial-sized bolt is clearly something not to trip on. I don't remember exactly where I found it, but it's in the vicinity of the old Englund Marine along the River Walk in Astoria.

Compass Rose: Belém, western Lisbon, Portugal

Compass Rose, Oeiras, Portugal Oeiras, Portugal ~ July 24, 2009

Many thanks to JM of Oeiras and environs daily photo for the use of this magnificent piece of pavement! You MUST enlarge it. Those are actually people down there! For the full story and comments check out JM's original post of the rose.

I also learned from JM that this type of pavement pattern (the black and white wavy lines) originated in Portugal. Having not been to Portugal (yet), I first encountered similar patterns in Brazil. In fact, I posted one of the sidewalks from Sao Paulo during the first week of Tapirgal's Daily Image.

Keeping the Water Clean

Astoria, Oregon ~ April 28, 2010
"No Dumping, Drains to River"

I've been seeing a lot of similar signs on the streets in places such as Astoria, Portland, and Bend. Of course, I was first attracted by the image of a fish on the street, then I read the message.

Variety and Veneer

Paving on the sidewalk in central market, Manaus, Brazil Manaus, Brazil ~ April 14, 2007

In and around the central market can be seen a variety of paving styles and patterns, mainly in black and white. The yellow-bordered truck ramp blends right in, especially as the rain created a veneer of mud like an artist's wash over everything.
